THE MAKER UNMADE

Jonathan Miles & Derek Shiel

Seren Books
1st edition 1995, 2nd edition 2003

A monograph of the visual work of David Jones with over 300 illustrations

PRESS

The best book on David Jones
Julian Mitchell, The Spectator

Through the exploration of the visual work in relation to Jones’s life it exposes the lineaments and patterns of an intensely original mind … it teases out the strands … as differing influences weave and interweave
The Times

authoritative, massively researched … a sophisticated acquaintance with the cultural context and many vivid details of biography
The Times Literary Supplement

A major scholarly work … altogether contemporary, but with an entirely un-modish intellectual and argumentative rigour
The New Welsh Review

this remarkable book has uncovered a vast amount of previously unseen visual and written material. The text continues throughout the book to be alert, scholarly and thorough and Catherine Louveau’s design magnificently matches the fine text with superb graphics
Christine Kinsey, The New Welsh Review

written in a masterly style
The Planet

A compelling portrait of the brilliant poet-painter
The Western Mail

A readable, stimulating and highly informative book
Agenda

Ambitious and substantial. Here at last is the full record of the visual work and essential on chronology
Fiona McCarthy, The Observer

intelligent sensitive insight … refreshing and incisive
The Tablet

Succeeds in being readily comprehensible while also being scholarly. Exceptionally well produced, beautifully illustrated

The Literary Review

recently reprinted, The Maker Unmade is still the best book on Jones’s life and work
New Welsh Review
